Candles

I love candles! Unfortunately, most of the candles available at the local grocery – even ones found in health food stores – contain ingredients that I personally find undesirable. Rather than give up my love of candles I began hand pouring my own using only food grade kosher soy oil combined with food grade or GRAS ingredients to scent them.

I chose soy because soy oil burns cleaner, lasts longer, holds more fragrance and supports American agriculture. It contains no toxic chemicals or carcinogenic compounds. My soy candles do not release the toxins that paraffin candles emit. Any candle that contains ANY AMOUNT of paraffin can emit toxins when heated.

Paraffin wax is a by-product of fuel refining – specifically, Paraffin is basically the “bottom of the barrel” even after asphalt is extracted. Paraffin is the final byproduct in the petroleum refining chain.

Even “food grade” paraffin contains several known carcinogens (cancer causing agents) identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – such as benzene and toulene, which are released into the air as a paraffin candle burns or melts. Some other air contaminants in paraffin fumes include methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and naphthalene–substances found in paint, lacquer and varnish removers.

All this goes for those convenient melting blocks used in warmers as well. In fact several of those companies use specialized warmers to prevent their wax from getting “too hot”. My thought is why use something toxic in the first place?

My soy candles do not put your health at risk – no special equipment required.  Since food grade soy oil melts at a cool 106ºF my candles make an excellent massage oil and body moisturizer plus they burn 40% longer than wax candles, are soot-free.
